Frequently asked questions.
If you're new to Root Integrative Medicine or to acupuncture in general, these are the questions most patients ask before their first visit.
Is this practice right for me?+
Root Integrative Medicine is designed for patients who want personalized, high-quality, natural care and are looking for more than a standard clinical visit. If you value privacy, convenience, and a provider who genuinely knows your case — you're in the right place. We welcome patients new to acupuncture and those who have had prior experience with Eastern medicine.
What is a DACM and why does it matter?+
A DACM — Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine — is a doctoral-level credential representing advanced training in acupuncture, herbal medicine, and integrative health. Dr. Gulati also holds DiplAc status, meaning she is board-certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). This is the highest level of professional certification available in her field.
Do you accept insurance?+
Root Integrative Medicine operates as a private-pay, concierge practice. We do not bill insurance directly. Many patients choose to submit claims to their insurance on their own, and we are happy to provide a superbill to assist. We recommend checking with your provider about out-of-network acupuncture benefits.
What does an in-home concierge appointment look like?+
Dr. Gulati arrives at your home fully equipped to provide the same level of care as a clinic visit. She brings all necessary treatment supplies and creates a private, calm treatment space within your home. No special setup is required on your part. Sessions typically run 60–90 minutes for initial visits.
What should I expect at my first appointment?+
Your first visit includes a comprehensive intake consultation — we'll review your health history, discuss your goals, and Dr. Gulati will ask detailed questions to understand the root causes of your concerns. Treatment typically follows during the same session. Plan for 60–90 minutes for your first appointment.
Is acupuncture painful?+
Acupuncture needles are extremely fine — far thinner than a standard medical needle — and most patients report minimal to no discomfort during needle insertion. Many patients find acupuncture deeply relaxing and fall asleep during treatment.
How many sessions will I need?+
The number of sessions depends on your condition, health history, and goals. Dr. Gulati will make a specific recommendation after your intake consultation. Most patients begin to notice changes within 4–6 sessions; chronic conditions may benefit from longer-term support.
What areas of Rhode Island do you serve for in-home visits?+
Dr. Gulati provides in-home concierge visits to patients in Newport, Watch Hill, Westerly, East Greenwich, Narragansett, Barrington, Bristol, and surrounding communities. Please reach out to confirm availability in your specific area.
Can you work alongside my existing medical care?+
Yes. Integrative medicine is designed to complement — not replace — conventional care. Dr. Gulati frequently works alongside patients' existing medical teams and can coordinate with your physician or specialist when appropriate.
What is cosmetic acupuncture / microneedling?+
Cosmetic acupuncture and facial microneedling are natural, non-toxic approaches to skin rejuvenation. They stimulate collagen production, improve skin tone and texture, and reduce the appearance of fine lines — without injectables or surgery. Both treatments require a series of sessions for optimal results.
How do I get started?+
Simply complete a brief consultation request on our Book page. Dr. Gulati's team will follow up within 24–48 hours to confirm your appointment and answer any remaining questions.
